I'll bet many of you are suprised to find a TurboRes Typeshop still for sale. So are we! But it is for sale, and if you are interested, you can send an email to inquire what the status of this unit is currently.

    The TurboRes Typeshop
is comprised of two separate products: the LM 1000 Laser Typesetter and the GS1280 WYSIWYP (What You See Is What You PRINT) monitor.  The LM 1000  is the first LaserMaster printer bundled as a typesetter, built using the famous Canon engine that HP used for its famous Laserjet II printer. It is very durable and reliable (perhaps Canon's most reliable engine ever). It is not to be confused with the Unity 1000, which was the last version released. Unlike the Unity, which has its controller inside the printer, the LM 1000 comes with a full length controller board that goes inside your PC (requires a standard 8-bit slot and room for a full length adapter board board - most 386 and 486 mother-boards could house full length cards - unlike most of the newer motherboards of today). It also requires the use of LaserMaster Fonts, or Adobe Typefaces and a version of Adobe Type Manger compatible with Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups. This particular unit is for the PC only (you can't use a Mac).

The Second part of the TYPESHOP system is comprised of the GS1280 video monitor combination video card controller (the printer controller is actually linked to the video controller for What You See Is What You PRINT, so it's really a true WYSIWYG typesetting system. This GS1280 monitor is a high resolution accurate font rendering system that displays graphics in high resolution Grey Scale.   Together, these two units were known as the TurboRes Typeshop. One thing that needs to be said is the combination of of the high res and the greyscale produces true on screen anti-aliasing, so that the end result is on-screen text that is a lot more clear and crisp than people are used to seeing to today with Microsoft Windows Anti-Aliasing technology. And that's true at all font sizes. This is really a system for someone printing text who wants to see what it is going to print like onscreen before it's printed on the LM 1000. (Note: The LaserMaster Disply will not run under Dos. It will only show the Windows Desktop. You will need a separate monitor to see any Dos screens. See below for tech tips links.

As we see it, the biggest problem is that you are limited to an early Windows OS (Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups, and therefore, can't use up-to-date versions of Quark or PageMaker software. You also need two standard slots free for the controller cards, and they must be able to hold two full size slots (not the smaller controller boards that one sees today. Usually older 486 PCs can accommodate these controllers. If you have such a PC and you are okay with using older DTP software, the TurboRes Typeshop system makes for great and durable typesetting system.

In perfect working order, if you don't need to use current software and OS to do your typesetting, then this system provides speed and great output on a durable platform. Cartridges for the printer are still available (Laserjet II cartridges work fine). You can even find Microfine toner to use when re-charging cartridges. There are different drums also that can be used, when recharging to get extra fine results.

This particular unit has only seen light to moderate use as an in-store demo and therefore, has plenty of life left in it. In fact, it's in excellent condition. It was our in-store demo unit, and that's how we know that it's got quite a lot of life left in it.

The total package had an original price of over  $10,000. Available from Working Solutions for $395 plus freight (priced so low - not because of its condition - condition is great - but because of the fact that it cannot be used with newer versions of Microsoft Windows and the newer software that requires newer versions of Windows and because the product is no longer supported by the manufacturer, and therefore, we cannot support these products either). Monitor and printer runs in either Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups. If you are okay with that, and have a computer that can take two full length cards, and want high resolution output, this is some deal. Others who require more up to date OS and DTP software are recommended to look elsewhere for a solution.  If you need a LaserMaster PostScript solutions, click here.
