- Exploritorium
The Exploritorium is truly a great online science
museum, and quite obviously, a great deal of work
has gone into its construction by its Webmaster,
and others involved with the project.
We take issue, however with the fact that in this
day and age, with all the modern alternatives
that exist to dissection, and which are being
recognized and adopted by medical schools that
the Exploritorium has produced a section to
"enhance" the experience of the actual
dissection of a real cow's eye.
Aside from the moral issues, which abound, mainly
because students have little choice regarding
participation in such dissections, even when they
are morally opposed to the idea, there are other
issues which are becoming increasing valid for
banning the dissection of actual body part in our
school classrooms, not the least of which is the
HEALTH issue. As a society, we have proven that
we have neither the funds nor even the
inclination to properly keep watch on large
number of the diseased animals that are being
sold for consumption, let alone supervise the the
animals that are being sold for dissection.
We think the Exploritorium is a great site! We
very much applaud its creators. We only hope that
eventually they will replace the "cow
dissection" page with some of the newer
computer modeling programs, which certainly do an
adequate job at teaching anatomy.
Reverence for the wonders of biology do not
reside in having our children cut up dead
animals. And additionally, it is not safe for
them to do so.
Go to the Exploritorium! Visit this
wonderful site. And while you are there, let Ron Hipschman, the talented and
hard working Webmaster know that you appreciate
his work, but feel the cow's eye
dissection should be replaced with
something a little more in step with the times.
